Nature conservation area/natural monument
The former Büecke military training area, now the Kleiberg pasture landscape, is a 230-hectare Natura 2000 site that has been a nature reserve since 2004. It lies like a green island in the middle of the fertile fields of the Haarstrang. Species worthy of protection here are the yellow-bellied toad, the red kite and the red-backed shrike. Their populations should increase again.
The two endangered species of the centaury and the thorny hair-grass can be found in the sparse open land.

Promoting nature conservation and tourism are the primary goals of this ERDF project, which is funded equally by the European Union and the state of North Rhine-Westfalen.
To this end, ponds and pools were created, pastures for cattle and horses were established, and three viewing hills and trails were built. The new“Alter Soestweg”bike route now connects Soest and Möhnesee directly and offers magnificent views of the fascinating cultural landscape. Three beautiful Schledden valleys have been made visible again through the creation of trails. Along the hiking trails, informational signs provide details about the nature, culture, and history of the old military training ground.
Wide, open areas in the center and west are grazed year-round by a few semi-wild horses and cattle. This creates a mosaic of open spaces interspersed with clusters of shrubs and small woods. Other areas are kept open by sheep.
The Liz offers interesting excursions through the nature reserve and has developed GPS tours for exploring nature on the Kleiberg.
Accessibility Information
- Some of the trails have steep inclines.
- The trails run partly along old tank tracks, partly on gravel, and partly on dirt or grass.
- There are no restrooms nearby.
