Lake Möhnesee is located on the edge of the Arnsberg Forest between the Westfalen Bay, the Haarstrang, and the Sauerland, and thus lies along the main migration route of many waterfowl. The dam in Günne was built between 1908 and 1913. This led to the creation of the Möhne Dam (
), whose primary purpose is to supply water to the Ruhrgebiet. Lake Möhnesee is a European Special Protection Area for birds.

At Lake Möhnesee, you can enjoy the scenery. For those interested, the lake offers excellent opportunities for birdwatching. About 25 species of waterfowl are regularly seen here. During the winter months, large flocks of goosanders, goldeneyes, and tufted ducks stay here, and during migration season, ospreys are sometimes spotted as well. Tufted ducks and great crested grebes live on the lake year-round. Cormorants come to the lake to feed from mid-August through the end of September. They usually gather near the Heve Peninsula in the late afternoon, where they can be observed from three vantage points. Only about 100 birds remain at the lake year-round.

On the rocky sections of the lake’s shores, there are large beds of triangular or wandering clams, which serve as an important food source for diving ducks and coots.

A long loop trail leads from the dam (sign x 24) along the Heve branch (x 26) to the gatehouse (A 7); from there, it continues along the lakeside promenade (sign A 7) to Delecke and back to Günne (A 9/A 8) (14 kilometers).Alternatively, you can also choose the “Möhnesee Heve Peninsula,” “Möhnesee Hevesee,” and “Möhneaue” loop trails.
